1894 National League

The greatest team of its era was the 1890s Baltimore Orioles, and it was the dirtiest team in baseball, according to The Sporting News.

Faked throws, feigned steals, actual steals, superbly executed cutoff plays—all of these had the Oriole opposition reeling. “This isn’t baseball they’re playing, moaned Giants manager Monte Ward in 1894. “It’s an entirely different game. “

Oriole Baseball was tough baseball, innovative baseball, baseball of the next century: the hit-and-run, the backing up of throws, the positioning of players to take outfield throws. The O’s won pennants in the 12-team National League in 1894, 1895, and 1896, and batted .332 as a team during that span of time. They finished in second place in 1897 and 1898.

Manager Ned Hanlon diligently drilled all his Orioles in the fine art of bunting to capitalize on the rule change that had moved the pitcher’s mound from 50 feet to sixty feet, six inches from the plate. And Hanlon instructed his groundskeeper to keep bunts in fair territory. The infield was also given special treatment. Kept rock-hard, that surface became the launching pad for the “Baltimore Chop”—O’s hitters smashed hard on the ball, pounding into the cement -hard infield, and scampered to first base before infielders could gather up the ball. 1895 National League

The 1895 race, though decided by three games, suffered from poor scheduling since, in the last ten games of the season, first-place Baltimore played seven games but second-place Cleveland played only two. Baltimore went 6-1 while Cleveland split, so that the half-game lead of September 21 edged up by the day, with Cleveland powerless to do anything about it. In the last quarter of the 19th century, Boston finished on top of the National League eight times; however, the Beaneaters really got it going in the 1890s—winning the pennant in 1891, 1892, 1893, 1897, and 1898.

Boston’s 31-game winner, Kid Nichols, always pitched well against the Orioles. The corner infielders excelled at their positions. First baseman Fred Tenney originated the 3-6-3 double play and played deep. Jimmie Collins changed play at third base with his quick pickup of slowly hit balls.

Best won/lost record for decade: Boston (NL) 1897: 93-39.
Greatest series in nineteenth-century baseball: Sept. 24-27, 1897. Three-game set between Baltimore and Boston.

“In 1897, there was a great two-team race. The Boston Beaneaters started poorly, but went 21-2 in June to roar back into the race. On August 21, the defending champion Baltimore Orioles trailed Boston by three games. By August 28, Boston had pulled ahead by percentage points, but were still a half-game behind because they had played fewer games.

“And then, for twenty-eight days, the margin between the two teams never grew larger than one full game. Baltimore won eleven in a row from September 4 through September 16. It is currently in the hands of Bofors and a few others who are making progress of improving this season significantly, including adding transactions and real-life lineups.

1902 Major Leagues (*** Wiki Season ***)

When the Louisville franchise dropped out of the National League in 1899, Pittsburgh had the good fortune of being owned by the same man, brewer Barney Dreyfuss, who hauled his best players up the Ohio River to the Steel City. Among these were future legends Honus Wagner, Fred Clark, Tommy Leach, and Deacon Phillippe. As a result, the only true “dynasty” in the club’s history was formed as the Pirates won consecutive pennants in 1901-02-03. The Pittsburgh uniform of this era was awed as was the Yankee uniform of later decades. The dark blue stockings with red stripes were symbolic of the champions of the baseball world. The jersey was short-sleeved with no trim except for dark blue collar. The same basic blue cap with a “P” was retained from the 1890s. Best offense in the first decade of the 1900s: 1902 Pittsburgh

This season was created by Robert Bofors. The June 3, 2006 version is a basic Wiki season in development, yet it is playable. The June 26, 2006 version is a fifth edition and has improved pitch-by-pitch performance with pitcher durability ratings, estimated batter strikeouts, estimated caught stealing stats, and run, steal, and jump ratings. The July 14, 2007 version is a more standardized "Wiki Season."

1906 tactical: Detroit platoons their catchers. Boss Schmidt couldn’t hit lefthanders. The Tigers for several years played Freddie Payne, Oscar Stanage, or Ira Thomas against left-handed pitchers.

1908 Major Leagues (*** Deluxe Season ***)

1908 was an exciting, unforgettable season in baseball history with a tense three team pennant races in both leagues. In the American League it was the year of the pitcher with Ed Walsh keeping the weak hitting White Sox in the race with an astonishing season going 40-15 with 42 complete games and 11 shutouts while pitching 464 innngs with a 1.42 ERA. Addie Joss of the Naps lead the league with his 1.16 ERA while going 24-11 with 29 complete games and 9 shutouts. The Tigers who won the pennant on the last day of the season were inspired by the one-two punch of Ty Cobb (.324 and 108 RBI) and Sam Crawford (.311 and 80 RBI), and the pitching of rookie Ed Summers who went 24-12 with a 1.64 ERA.

The race in the junior circuit was overshadowed by the National League. The Pirates were almost a one man team with the "Flying Dutchman" Honus Wagner hitting .354 with 109 RBI's in this pitcher's year. John McGraw's Giants had an incredible season with Turkey Mike Donlin hitting .334 and driving in 106. "Big Six" Christy Mathewson went 37-11 with 34 complete games and 11 shutouts but his team lost out to a great Cubs team. Lead by Frank Chance "the Peerless Leader" the Cubs were strong up the middle with catcher Johnny Kling and the combination of Joe Tinker and Johnny Evers. Their pitching was lead by Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown with a 29-9, 1.47 ERA season while completing 27 games with 9 shutouts. Even these performances fade into oblivion as the pennant race was probably decided by a ridiculous error when Fred Merkle failed to touch second base on a game ending hit. The Cubs won the rematch and went on to win it all in the series against the Tigers.

“A cork-center ball was invented by Ben Shibe in 1909 and marketed by the Reach Company, which supplied balls for the American League, in 1911. Spalding followed, developing a cork-center ball for the National League. Batting levels jumped in 1911 and 1912. By 1913 the pitchers had regained control, largely due to the emery ball.

This homebrew season was originally created by Paul Dunwoody. Later, Shane Holmes made improvements to it. Stephen Drake was the third person to make improvements to it in which he added real-life lineups. Click HERE to read about some of the work. One significant change to 1914 with the February 24, 2007 version is the separating of the Federal League into its own database. This was done to allow the AL & NL to be defined as separate leagues then be conjoined as an Org. This is consistent with other seasons.

The March 14, 2007 version corrects the AL pitching event tables (BFP & SH stat) to eliminate a problem of too much offense. The December 29, 2007 version corrects a couple of minor data errors.

The 1914 Federal League database is compatible with DMB Encyclopedia and can be loaded in with the results from a AL & NL simulation.

1915 Major Leagues & Federal League (*** Deluxe Season ***)

The 1915 season contains the best and the worst of the Philadelphia teams. On the good, the Phillies won their only pennant until their next one in 1950. The were led by Pete Alexander with his phenominal 31-10, 1.22 season and Gravvy Cravath's 24 homers. On the bad, the season witnessed Connie Mack's firesale transformation of his 1914 pennant winning Athletics into a last-place 1915 team. Babe Ruth played his first complete season with the pennant-winning Red Sox, going 18-8, 2.44.

This homebrew season was originally created by Tom Milne. As-played schedules and Retrosheet transactions were added by Stephen Drake in March 2007. The October 2007 version (AL/NL) was deluxed by Stephen Drake to include real-life lineups and detailed transactions.

The 1915 Federal League database is compatible with DMB Encyclopedia and can be loaded in with the results from a AL & NL simulation.

The July 14, 2007 version by Robert Bofors is a clean-up of the previous version.

The change to the June 1, 2006 version was to clean up and add some data that was being estimated. Robert Bofors gets credit for this version clean-up.

The change to the May 14, 2006 version was to improve a problem that 2B, 3B, HR and DPs were being simulated in significantly fewer quantities than real-life. The events tables for all players were resaved with estimated values (batters: DP; pitchers: DP, 2B/3B, HR).

1919 Major Leagues

The 1919 season will always be known for the Black Sox scandal resulting in the White Sox throwing the World Series to the Cincinnati Reds. However, down 4 games to 1, the Sox came back to win games 6 and 7 only to lose the series in game 8 (it was a best of 9 contest that year). Hod Eller was 2-0 for the Reds. The Sox’ big duo of Lefty Williams and Eddie Cicotte, both involved in the scandal, were 0-3 and 1-2 respectively while Shoeless Joe Jackson and Buck Weaver, also involved, batted .375 and .324.

This season was originally created by Chris Williams.

1921-071606: The “Simpkins Edition.” Terry Simpkins, a professional researcher, upgraded this second edition with full transactions and with daily, as-played, starting lineups and with all means possible with accurate, active rosters. Download his “Grids” that account for every player on each game day. Also, Simpkins adjusted many of the ratings and manager tendencies. Robert Bofors edited the database and tested its performance. He reworked the parks and eras in the Organizer, and he corrected all player data so it now matches Retrosheet’s statistics. Bofors set the event table estimates and saved the tables. Norm Price helped with play testing and with tweaking manager tendencies while Ken Schmidt reviewed roster depth charts.

1924 will always be remembered as the year that Walter Johnson, in the twilight of his great career with the perennially losing Senators, finally made it to a World Series. In Game 7 of the World Series, a pebble in the infield and Johnson pitching out of the bullpen sealed the World Championship for the Senators. In the American League, Babe Ruth was dominant with a .378 average and 46 homers as the Yankees came up just short of the Senators. In the National League, a late-charging and over-achieving Dodgers team, lead by Dazzy Vance's 28 wins, almost caught the Giants. Rogers Hornsby lead all hitters with a .424 average and .507 on-base percentage despite his Cardinals team finishing in 6th place, 28 1/2 games back.

This homebrew season (March 26, 2006 Version) was originally created by Tom Milne. Stephen Drake, with the help of Shane Holmes and Ken Schmidt, added lineups, transactions, an as-played schedule and a detailed Depth Chart/Managerial Profiles.

The season will simulate accurately with either Real-Life lineups or Depth Chart lineups. The season will not run without transactions due to teams having more than 40 players on their rosters.

The original version was created by Tom Milne many years ago in DMB V6.5. It was the first season he created.

The APFAS version was modified by an unknown person who didn't document their minor changes. After exchanging emails with Tom, the March 26, 2006 version was created using Tom's original version as the origin.
