I left the parking area for Connecticut's highpoint around 5:30 PM with the hope of making it to Mount Greylock, Massachussets' highpoint before sundown. The roads to Mount Greylock State Reservation were the typical state roads, going through every town on the way. As I passed through Pittsfield, the closest town to Mount Greylock, I considered finding a hotel and doing the highpoint in the morning. Unfortunately, most of the hotels were filled and the only one I could find with a room wanted $95 for a smoking room. I passed and decided to go see Mount Greylock before sunset and deal with finding a hotel afterwards.
As I got to the Mount Greylock State Reservation, the 8 mile winding road up the mountain seemed to take forever. Eventually I made it to the summit with plenty of sunlight. There was a crowd at the top to see the sunset, which was very colorful. I took my photos at the summit and decided my time would be better spent finding a hotel rather than enjoying the sunset.
As I exited the park from the north entrance near North Adams, I stopped at a Holiday Inn there and found that it was full. Evidently the Boston Pops were doing an outdoor concert somewhere in western Massachussets, making all the hotels full. It was suggested that I go east 45 minutes to Greenfield and try to find a hotel there. Fortunately, I found a hotel there for $72 at 10 PM.
