Note: Charles Mound is located on private property. Before visiting, permission should be asked for in advance from the owners of the property. They are currently very accommodating towards people wishing to visit Illinois' highpoint. Please respect them and hopefully this highpoint can remain accessible. For the current protocol for requesting permission, please visit America's Roof.

In the morning I spent 3 hours at the Lansing farm outside of Dyersville, Iowa. That is the farm and baseball field where the movie "Field of Dreams" was filmed. It is a very peacefull setting with the baseball field amongst the corn fields.

I arrived at Charles Mound in early afternoon. The property owners have a very long, one-lane driveway through their farm back to their house. They have marked special parking for people wishing to visit the highpoint. The walk up to Illinois' highpoint is a short walk to the back of their property. They have taken great care to make the highpoint a welcome to all visitors. They have done nice landscaping around the highpoint and have constructed a nice marker. There are even 2 lawn chairs next to the register notebook. They've made copies of the register and the entire visitation log going back to 1995 is there to look through.

I was the only visitor at the time to Charles Mound. The day before there were 5 or 6 visitors.

Upon leaving, I ran into the property owners and was able to thank them personally for allowing me to visit Illinois' highpoint.

  • Definitely stop and visit the "Field of Dreams" movie site which is about an hour's drive to the west. Be sure to purchase your souvenirs from the stand near the farmhouse. This is owned by the family that lives in the house and they have the integrity of the meaning of the movie and the field. The concession stand near left-field is heavily commercialized and run by out-of-town interests. Please support the local people.
