Malaysia is a country with a long history of colonialism by the Dutch, English and Portuguese. It has also been influenced by China. It is an easy country to visit from Singapore as the southern half of the country is considered very safe. My experience was that everyone I encountered spoke English very well. The food is very spicy, even when ordered mild. Prices for food and lodging for a tourist are significantly lower than Singapore.

The country is very hot and humid, so be prepared to sweat.

I recommend visiting Malaysia for its multi-cultural history and its spicy food.
