![]() Areas Visited: Sofia, Mountains near Sofia, Plovdiv. (2009)
Bulgaria surprised me with the ease of getting around and how interesting the country is. I had low expectations, but was very pleased with the visit.
Bulgaria is open to tourism and is unspoiled by hoards of tourists like western Europe. The biggest challenge is that the Bulgarian language uses the Cyrillic alphabet, but a few days studying it and it's not very difficult to deal with. Transportation around the country can be quicker and more convenient by bus than train. My experience that the trains through the country from Greece and the train out of the country into Romania are very slow with many delays. Often time is spent sitting in a station waiting for a train going the opposite direction to pass.
I highly recommend visiting Bulgaria for its rich history.
